Hi! I have been playing the guitar for a little over 6 years now, I am in no way a beginner now, though! All thanks to getting myself setup with the best online guitar lessons for beginners back when I first started out.
I spent weeks, if not months, trying out different guitar tutorials, courses, lessons and training without much success – other than wasting time and never really understanding what I was doing. I have since put together a definitive list of online guitar lessons for both beginners and advanced players. This is so I can help you all skip the wasted time looking for new videos and blindly trying to teach yourself new techniques. I am actually a drummer, originally anyway! I used drum lessons online as a refresher after I got back from travelling, you have no idea how much you can forget with just a few months away from an instrument! Muscle memory gets you half way back to normal but only practice brings it all back. It was actually because of these drum lessons that I thought I would do the same to learn guitar.

What type of online guitar lessons do I need?
These days guitarists are very lucky with the amount of information available at their finger tips through the internet. That goes for learning guitar to anything else you want to know about. Not only can you find reviews but you also have millions of pages dedicated to providing high quality guitar training and learning courses. Some of these online lessons are free and some are paid. Obviously, the paid lessons are easier to follow and provide a lot more information than the free lessons.
Like Spider-Man’s Uncle once said “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility” and the same sentiment can be used for the information available online. You need to be responsible when choosing a lesson to follow, in most cases videos on YouTube are OK but by no means should they be something you use for learning guitar – especially if you’re a complete beginner!
You need to remember that anyone with a guitar, webcam and YouTube account can become a teacher but by no means does that make them qualified – or even any good at guitar themselves!
Paid or Free guitar training
It’s the question you all came to this page expecting to be answered so let’s get it done quick.
If you’re a beginner then do not pass go, do not collect free lessons. You MUST get yourself onto a planned and structured course for beginners. Without learning the foundations correctly all you will do is go around in circles picking up bad habits so when you do decide to use proper guitar lessons for beginners you will have to unlearn all the bad habits. Many guitarists make the same mistake and end up regretting not getting the foundations down properly. Put it this way, do you want to spend hours on YouTube, blogs and forums hunting for answers or would you rather spend $20 and have everything delivered to you whenever you need it?!
Do you need to learn guitar online? Well, for me it’s a no-brainer. The courses and lessons we describe below often feature videos and courses produced by guitarists you have heard and seen before – there professional guitarists for bands all around the world. In other words, would you rather spend $50 for one 45 min lesson from your local teacher or spend $20 a month for unlimited lessons from professional guitarists. Yes, is the answer isn’t it!
Reviews of the Best 2 Guitar Lesson Websites
This list has been compiled based on our opinion, the reviews from other players and all other variables each website brings. The list is also in order, meaning the one I like the most is at the top.
JamPlay was founded in 2006 and has been providing high quality and arguably the best online guitar lessons for beginners. When you sign up for JamPlay you can expect easy to follow lessons with a lot of in-depth information to help improve your technique. Most importantly it helps you increase your level while maintaining a structure to your learning so you get playing songs a lot quicker. All of the videos I have watched offer a multi-camera option which basically makes it feel like your in the same room as the instructor. The multi-camera feature helped me a lot when trying to get my fingers into the exact position needed for the lesson. In my opinion, the multi-camera feature bridges the gap perfectly when comparing online lessons to in person lessons.
No matter what you want to learn JamPlay will more than likely have it covered in their catalogue of 5300+ lessons – Rock, country, metal, jazz etc. Honestly, the only “bad” reviews I have seen of JamPlay have been that it’s not FREE! With a cost of $20 a month or $13 a month if you want to pay for the whole year its by far the best value for money I have seen. Compare it to in person lessons and you will have had only two or three lessons before you spend more than the annual cost of JamPlay.
The people I know, myself included, have been able to improve their skill level very quickly with JamPlay.
- It’s the top solution for lessons covering just about everything from metal to country – it’s all there.
- Lessons are provided in HD Videos
- Ability to learn actual songs you know!
- Backing tracks provided in various styles and keys
- The Ability to video chat with teachers is also available!
- Lessons taught by professional artists – this alone makes it worth the price!
- You have no ability to download lessons as of yet meaning you do need an internet connection
- There are a lot of teachers meaning it can be a little off-putting when you have a different teacher from one lesson to the next
Who do we recommend JamPlay to? Well, anyone looking to start playing guitar, anyone already playing and even those who want to learn the more advanced stuff. It is a great all round course of lessons for learning guitar.
Guitar Tricks Review
Since 1998, before anyone was even able to watch online guitar training on the likes of YouTube, Guitar Tricks have been providing some of the best guitar training and courses. Guitar Tricks boasts an impressive 1.8million registered users as well as 8000 lessons. Lessons cover ever topic and technique you can imagine, from beginner lessons to rock star guitarists. Guitar Tricks offer a free trial to get your feet wet and test out the platform. One of my favourite parts of Guitar Tricks are the lessons that help you learn some fairly well-known songs like Smoke on the water – an iconic song!
Guitar Tricks has been around the longest (that I know!) which in my opinion does make it one of the best resources for learning guitar on the internet.

What Online Guitar Lessons are best for beginners?
When it comes down to JamPlay VS. Guitar Tricks who exactly comes off best? Well, it depends on what you want and how you want to learn, not to mention how much you can spend.
Both providers offer a high-quality learning experience with structured and intelligent beginner guitar lessons which build on what you already know, or what you don’t know if you are a beginner. The only real differences are the ability to join live lessons and a private Q & A session with guitar lesson teachers from JamPlay, this is something that is missing from Guitar Tricks.
Personally, I would opt for JamPlay in the JamPlay vs Guitar Tricks face off, as it offers the Q & A sessions and live lessons which suit me nicely, as I did tend to have questions when I learned how to play the guitar. Also, I feel the overall experience of learning guitar online with JamPlay was better, I got the impression that I was learning faster than I did with any other provider.
Face-To-Face Guitar Learning Or Online Lessons for a Beginner?
It’s obvious that having training from a guitar teacher face-to-face is a good way to learn guitar for beginners, but its also the most expensive method and nowhere near the fastest way to learn. In most cases, it will be more than $50 per hour. You also have to factor in travelling time and the fact that you can only learn new things when the teacher shows you how. Getting yourself a course of training online for a month is cheaper than any face-to-face lesson, that I know of, for the hour. Choosing any of the online providers will get you unlimited lessons suitable for beginners as soon as you sign up. You will no doubt storm through the lessons and become a much better electric guitar (or acoustic) player within days, rather than months!
Learning online is, in my opinion, just as good as with a teacher because you actually have a teacher even with online training. These online teachers talk you through everything you need to know about the lesson, guitar, song or whatever else the lesson is teaching.
The biggest selling point for myself, and many others is the fact that learning guitar online can be done at any time. The lessons are on-demand so you can play, pause, rewind lessons as you need. So, if you happen to be a night owl then you’re in luck!
So if you want to learn to play like Brian May then you will need the best online lessons for beginners with a structured format from a reputable source like JamPlay and Guitar Tricks. Here is a little video of Brian May, just to get you in the mood! A little fact about Brian May is that he also made his own electric guitar, you can read more about it here.
